All Metal Products is in the ownership of a family involved with the fabrication of light metal products for 70 years. In 1938 Mr Piet Kommer Snr. secured the sole agency for wire mesh baskets in the Netherlands for a German manufacturer. These baskets were a revolution for farmers of the time, being lighter and stronger than the wicker and cane baskets that were traditionally used. Due to the German war effort of the time, the supply of these baskets stopped, and Piet extended his repair section into a small factory. The young sons Bram, Gil, Piet Jr. and Dirk were all involved in helping their Dad in the factory after school. By 1948 it had expanded to a healthy industry employing some 60 employees, manufacturing a substantial range of wire transport crates and baskets.
After finishing commercial college in Holland, Gil emigrated to New Zealand at the age of 18. Eventually Gil established a light metal fabrication shop of his own in Christchurch, and seeking to expand the business, emigrated to Australia with his Brother Piet in 1961. In 1962 the company “United Wire and Metal Works” Pty. Ltd. was registered, and rented a 3000sq ft factory in St Marys. In 1963, their Father Pieter Kommer Snr and their brothers, Bram and Dirk also emigrated out of Holland and joined the company. Bram’s education at technical college and experience in engineering was a valuable contribution to the growing business. The decision was made to purchase a 20,000 sq.ft. building on 10 acres further down the road at 41 to 57 Dunheved circuit. This would allow necessary extra space to increase production.
This much-expanded capacity allowed the company to take on larger production runs. The growth in the supermarket industry was about to explode exponentially. From 1966 to 1974 the company was the sole supplier to Franklins for their entire wire supermarket needs. Meanwhile the name of United Wire and Metal Works Pty. Ltd. had been changed to Uniwire Pty. Ltd.
After 1975, a larger proportion of the production in the factory shifted towards the manufacturing of pollution control bag retainers & point of sale and display stands. The ability to offer an unlimited variety of colours for point of sale stands through having their own powder coating system proved a boom in sales. The surface finish and hardness of epoxy powder was an excellent selling point.
Right throughout the eighties much new and improved machinery were added to the plant, such as; new projection spot welding machines, a Schlater mesh welder, NC controlled automatic benders, the Reflinghause and the Super-Jap computerised wire forming machine, as well as a number of European adjustable stroke excentric presses. Also since 1964 the company itself, with the help from Bram had manufactured dozens of high quality generic machines to suit various specialised production processes.
The company had needed a change of name, because the name “UNIWIRE” is too focussed on the word “wire”. The name “All Metal Products” Ltd. more appropriately reflected the ability to manufacture the variety of products the company was able to do. The tubular and sheet metal division had expanded to such extend that it became necessary to extend the factory premises by 1500 sq meters. During the high interest period of 1987 to 1996, no major investments were made. Within three years following the drop in interest rates, the company acquired nearly two million dollars of CNC controlled sheet metal working machinery, such as; the turret press with tooling, two press brakes, laser cutter, CNC tube bender etc. In 2003 a major update of $300,000.00 was commissioned to improve the powder coat plant. Also in 2003 a better and more fire proof storage facility for the spot welding jigs was built, as well as a new building to manufactured larger items such as pallets and stillages.
With the release of this website, All Metal Products Ltd. is presenting its newest logo revision and are pleased to be yet again on the cutting edge of design and fabrication.
